Prerequisits:
Content (Syllabus outline):
Basic concepts of information systems and their use (information, data and knowledge, data sources). Structured recording of data, information and knowledge (basic and complex data types, meta data, tabular data format, the links (relationships between data), data model). Storage (stacks of data, data servers, data storage). Use and maintenance of data, and management. Queries (Query Language, text search, retrieval of multimedia content, keywords, data mining, search of the text data). Privacy. Tools for working with data (direct networking, interfaces for networking, remote access client / server). Three-level architecture (web, active server pages, web services).
Objectives and competences:
The course gives a basic knowledge of information systems that are necessary for future engineers and technical professionals and is important for general education of an engineer in the information society. The course provides an overview of information systems, procedures for their planning and management, and various tools for data maintenance and querying the data. The content is interesting for all students of electrical engineering, but also a good basis for attending the technical subjects at higher levels of the study program where certain amount of the content is covered more in-depth.
